Fire Dancer | From contestant to performer

You can find all kinds of events and performances at the Great American Rockabilly Riot like the most anticipated event; the pin-up contest where women will be competing to be crowned Ms. Great American Rockabilly Riot Queen. At this year’s event, a former pin-up contestant will be showcasing her pyro dancing while judges are preoccupied with choosing a winner.

“My role during the rockabilly riot contest is to entertain the crowd with my Pyro’Dame performance while the judges consider the pin-up contest winners,” said Kimberly “Kiwi” De Marco, the owner of Venomous Tease Production.

Kiwi first began fire dancing around ten years ago where she learned her first moves after joining a class in the Pasithea Dance Company. As a result, she created her business allowing her to showcase her performances at her business’s events like the Art Junkie Pop-Up Market. This is where Kiwi believes caught the eye of Millie Rose Mitchell, who was last year’s contest winner and is currently running the pin-up contest.

“Kiwi entered this Rockabilly Rebel contest last May, I found out she was a pyro dancer and I thought it would be really cool to give her the opportunity to perform at the festival,” said Mitchell.

Mitchell noticed at last year’s event that people were becoming restless and leaving while the judges were deciding on a queen. After competing in an out-of-state pin-up contest, she saw they had added a performance while their judges considered who would be the winner. Using this pin-up contest as inspiration, Mitchell considered what kind of performance would be ideal for her event and stumbled across Kiwi’s dancing.

“It was my decision to have Kiwi perform during the contest. When there’s nothing planned while the judges deliberate, the crowd loses interest, so I thought it’d be best to have a performance so that people will stay interested and stick around to see who wins,” said Mitchell.

The pin-up contest will be held on Saturday, September 1. Along with the new performance in the event, Mitchell has also removed the different timeslots they had last year and combined it to avoid any confusion of what is happening. The contest will have the audience entertained from the moment it starts at 6 pm until it ends as the 12 finalists showcase their best pin-up outfits, hairstyles and smiles.

“With great music, sexy cars, sexy ladies, and all things Rockabilly/pin-up, what more can you ask for!?” said Kiwi.
