Brazilian Girls are one of the most fun and talented bands of the current music scene. With instrumental improvisations and electronic beats, they created a unique and addictive sound. Their eccentric image on stage has also become their trade mark.
Fusion Mag had the opportunity of speaking with the band, where they answered as a collective. This is what they had to say.
It’s been 11 years since your first album. What has changed the most within the group from then until now?
We’re not wiser, but clearly older.
It’s well known that much of your success is based on improvisation. Is that still the case?
Yes, especially on a business level.
You guys are the living example of the New York scene. What do you find the current scene to be for emerging, new bands?
New York will always be a great place for live music and new talents to find their voice.
After the album New York City what happened? Why did you guys wait so long to put out a new album?
We had 8 children, and one big argument.
We know you guys have side projects? Are you still doing those?
Yes, it helps having a sound board for other musical directions that we may feel, individually. After all, we’re 4 female, Brazilian individuals.
There are many aspects to your approach. What kind of people are attracted to the Brazilian Girls sound?
Mostly losers, marginals and outcasts, I’m afraid. Why? Are you attracted to the Brazilian Girls sound?
We know the song writing is done entirely by you guys, but who is responsible for the image of Brazilian Girls? For example, Sabina has positioned herself as one of the most stylish singers, and this is obviously a very important aspect.
Each one of us is responsible for their own image, but Sabina usually ends up getting her way. We also call her “The Tank.”
With the release of the single “The Critic” what’s the plan; enticing current followers or trying to gain new fans?
Ideally, both, but as mentioned above, we’re not really business wizards, so we just come up with the music and see what comes out of it naturally.
Do you have a project in the works? What can you tell us about the new record? What surprises do you have in store for your followers?
The record is very much in line with the other 3 records, we just let it come out. We’re looking to release the entire record before or around summer 2016.
We have a couple of cool songs to offer, other than that, we’re not that entertaining, nothing for the yellow press. Other than the fact that Sabina is playing a part in the FX series ‘Baskets’ with Zach Galifianakis, which starts airing on Jan.21st.
What do you expect from the El Paso/Juarez border public?
Their undivided attention. No flash photography, and please don’t hand joints to the band, as the outcome becomes highly unpredictable and possibly weird.
Brazilian Girls will be playing 02-13-16 at the Lowbrow Palace.
