This Halloween, Splendid Sun Productions is presenting their 4th annual Nightmare on Robinson Street. The celebration is a one-day event that highlights national touring acts, regional bands and some local favorites.
“The original we did was the Robinson Street Block Party in May 2014 and we wanted to mesh it with our Halloween party, and kind of showcase national touring bands as well as local acts,” said Patrick McNeil of Splendid Sun. “We’ll have local vendors and food trucks and some other little fun things out there. We’ll keep it pretty action packed.”
In years past, the block party encompassed Robinson street and L-shaped into the parking lot that used to be directly in front of the late Black Market, which was torn down earlier this year. This year, the area will be comprised of the Lowbrow Palace, part of Robinson street and the parking lot of a shopping center that’s behind Lowbrow.
“There will be a total of 3 stages, including the one inside Lowbrow,” McNeil said. “It’s really cool because the main stage is going to be on Robinson. The upper parking lot [behind Lowbrow] is elevated about a story and people will be able to look down on Robinson and get a really cool view of what’s going on down there.”
Some of the nationally-recognized bands include Young Rising Sons, Night Riots and Holy Wave. Regional and local acts number over 30 and include a wide array of genres; Rare Individuals, Hope Riot and Nalgadas are a few of the bands and artists providing local flavor.
Besides live music, there will be other activities to choose from. Organizers are still in the process of ironing out all the details of what games and activities will be available, but McNeil did give a glimpse of what we can look forward to:
“We organize Neon Desert and we want to keep it on that scale in terms of things to do, but just smaller. We’re going to be having live art as well. We’re still confirming the artists right now. We will have a costume contest and we really want to encourage people to come out and be festive. We’re aiming to make it really multi-faceted that way you don’t experience the whole event as soon as you walk in. We want to incorporate a lot of the infrastructure.”
Local vendors will be out peddling their wares and party-goers can also take advantage of bars strategically set up on the street, as well as the bar inside Lowbrow. Organizers want to keep the event affordable and have set ticket prices at $7 in advance, with the fee increasing to $10 at the door. The block party goes from 2 pm to 2am.
