Biography
Mattox is an artistic entity gravitating around the creative output of Miguel Valdez. Based in the El Paso/Juárez region, Mattox serves as an umbrella for music, printmaking, graphic design and video production.
Mattox started as a band in 2000 by Miguel Valdez, Luis Medina and Rogelio Casillas. Since then, the lineup shifted around a cast of collaborators comprised of musicians, visual and sound artists. The name Mattox comes from a street sign on El Paso’s east side. The street connects a lush golf course and an Immigration and Customs Enforcement Detention Center. Before undocumented immigrants are deported, they are driven past the fragrant cool air floating off the golf course.
As a band, Mattox has released one full-length album, Zero-Days (2010), and an EP, Catatonik (2006). In 2010, the group also released a collection of b-sides from the Zero-Days sessions, aptly titled Zero-Sides.
Mattoxlive.com is a regular source for upcoming art shows and new art from Mattox and other El Paso/Juarez creatives. The overarching goal is to highlight the unique performing, recording and visual arts exploding in the area.
