The El Paso Museum of Art is hosting the “Papel Chicano Dos: Works on Paper,” exhibit from the collection of Cheech Marin. It includes 65 works by 24 established and up-and-coming artists. The mixed media collection displays various motifs, including pre-Hispanic symbols, post-revolutionary scenes, the Chicano Movement and present day events.
Art continues to be pivotal to the Chicano Movement, which was born out of racial inequality, farm workers’ rights and education reform in the 1960s. To help highlight the exhibit, showcase the contributions of Hispanics to the art world and celebrate the eminent Chicano culture in El Paso, the museum is honoring the collection Saturday, March 3, 12-4 pm.
“The exhibit has already been up for a couple of weeks and will be on view through June,” said Kevin Burns, the museum’s education and curatorial associate. “[Saturday] we’re celebrating Chicano culture and art.”
Along with the art work, attendees can enjoy various food trucks, a variety of low riders, beer from Big Bend Brewing Company, music by Mother of Pearl Vinyl and activities in the museum’s art school.
“We’re going to have printmaking led by some of our teaching artists,” Burns said.
Funding for the exhibit is provided by lead sponsor CommUNITY en Acción, a group of business and civic leaders whose aim is to positively impact the community by promoting culture, education and the economic health of the Latino population.
“. . . We are proud to bring Mr. Marin’s collection to El Paso and be the lead sponsor for this exhibition,” said J. Xavier Banales, chair for CommUNITY en Accion.
The museum previously hosted Marin’s collection “Chicano Visions: American Painters on the Verge” in 2003.
