“My tattoo’d pin-up girls are the most popular. My favorite work is the most personal. On a technical level, the casual observer won’t notice much of a difference between a piece I’ve put a lot of personal emotion into and one that I made for the sake of making a beautiful image, but it’s an important difference in my experience.”
In the tattoo community there have been many artists who have made the transition from illustrating on a canvas to tattooing on skin with great success and acceptance. Now, if we want an illustrator who aside from creating designs, imprints them on to skin, then, very few options are left. Among them is the great Mike Giant. Originally from Albuquerque, NM, Giant bases his style on well defined simplistic lines and strokes. He combines them with letters and cholo symbology or with bases in iconography of gangs in L.A. and Mexico, purging his style and taking it to new horizons.
He, along with REBEL8 from San Francisco, CA, which base their designs on skateboard, graffiti and tattoo cultures, are dedicated to making t-shirts, sweatshirts, skateboards and other paraphernalia. Mike Giant has more than 15 years experience in the business. He has illustrated posters for rock bands, dabbled in graffiti art, and created album covers for bands such as Blink-182. All in his particular black and white style that is highly distinctive. His method is so unique that Sharpie (marker brand) launched a marker model named after him.
His tattooing style is peculiar- favoring a simple and detailed technique with bases in classic styles such as daggers, tigers, anchors and pin-ups; work that is reminiscent of the great tattooist Sailor Jerry. Since he doesn’t devote himself solely to this art form, he doesn’t have a permanent tattoo studio. He only tattoos friends or acquaintances, making his tattoo work even more exclusive and sought-after.

En el mundo del tatuaje existen muchos ilustradores que han hecho la transición al mundo del tatuaje con gran éxito y aceptación, ahora tomemos a un ilustrador que aparte de hacer diseños de tatuajes, los imprime sobre la piel, nos quedan muy pocas opciones y entre ellas podemos contar a el gran Mike Giant, originario de Albuquerque, New Mexico. Este ilustrador quien también es amante de las bicicletas, basa su estilo en trazos y líneas bien definidas y simples combinándolas con letras y simbología chola o con bases en la iconografía de las pandillas de L.A. y México, depurando su estilo y llevándolo a nuevos horizontes.
Él, junto a la compañía REBEL8 originaria de San Francisco CA que basa sus diseños en la cultura del skateboard, graffiti, y especialmente en la cultura del tatuaje, se dedican a crear camisetas, sudaderas, patinetas y demás parafernalia. Mike Giant tiene más de 15 años ilustrando posters para bandas de rock, haciendo graffiti , arreglando bicicletas y creando portadas para grupos como Blink-182, todo en su particular estilo blanco y negro que es rápidamente reconocido y que es tan especial que la marca de marcadores Sharpie tiene un modelo con su nombre.
Su estilo al tatuar es bastante peculiar, basándose en un estilo simple y detallado, con bases en estilos antiguos como dagas, tigres, anclas y pin-ups; estilo que recuerda al gran tatuador Sailor Jerry. Aunque no tiene un estudio fijo para tatuar ya que no se dedica a esto, sólo tatúa a amigos o conocidos, haciendo que sus trabajos como tatuador sean aún más cotizados.
