Happy Birthday René Magritte

René Magritte was born on 1898 in the province of Hainaut, Lessines. Magritte’s earliest paintings, which date back to 1915, were Impressionistic in style. His work was first exhibited in the U.S. in 1936 in New York City and again in two retrospective exhibitions, one at the Museum of Modern Art in 1965, and the other at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1992.

Contemporary artists have been greatly influenced by René Magritte’s stimulating examination of the fickleness of images. Artists who have been influenced by Magritte’s work include John Baldessari, Ed Ruscha, Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, Jan Verdoodt, Martin Kippenberger, Duane Michals and Storm Thorgerson.

Today is René Magritte’s birthday and in his honor we want to share with you some of his work!
