GOT KINKY?

In the mid 1990s, during an enormous musical movement in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon was revolutionizing the music scene in Mexico. Dubbed the “Seattle of Mexico,” Monterrey gave birth to excellent bands such as Control Machete, Zurdok Movimiento, El Gran Silencio, Jumbo, and Plastilina Mosh. It is precisely during this movement, which came to be known as “Avanzada Regia,” that the band “Kinky” emerged. The band was discovered by producer Chris Allison, who has also produced Coldplay, while Plastilina Mosh was recording their Juan Manuel album in 1999. Endearingly enough, Kinky’s demo was in the form of a cassette tape. Nevertheless, from the year 2000 until now, their success has sky-rocketed.

Kinky’s success is greatly due to their ability and strategy at marketing their music. Their songs have been used world-wide in commercials, films, TV series, etc. In their curriculum abound notable brands and names such as: Felicity, Motorola, Smirnoff Ice, Thirteen, Alias, Scooby Doo, 2Fast 2Furious, Nissan Altima, Sin Ton Ni Sonia, Nip/Tuck, La Hija del Canibal, Bimbo, Honda, MUN2, Without a Trace, Man on Fire, CSI New York, Madagascar, NBA TV promos, Fox Sports, Carlitos Way, FIFA 2006, Weeds and Gossip Girl.

These “regiomontanos” music is a delectable mix of samba, rock, dance, funk and techno with a definite Latin influence throughout, which has earned them a place amongst the best Latin band performances in Coachella; an honor shared with notable bands like Café Tacuba and Los Amigos Invisibles. Kinky’s multifaceted rhythms have allowed them to share stage with an array of artists from Cake and Flaming Lips to Ely Guerra, La Mala Rodriguez, and even Bronco. Their latest album, Sueño de la Maquina, has earned them two Latin Grammy Awards nominations in the “Best Alternative Music Album” and “Best Alternative song“ categories for Negro Dia.

Kinky’s last remarkable performance in El Paso was at the 2011 Neon Desert Music Festival, where they were a crowd favorite and had the multitude on full dance mode. All show expectations were met while the jumping mass ecstatically, and in unison, bellowed out the lyrics in a joyous stupor. On Wednesday December 19, at the Lowbrow Palace, El Paso will be able to dance again to Ejercicio#16, A Donde van los Muertos?, Sister Twisted and La Hija del Canibal. So, say you… got Kinky??
