EL PASO ROCK | REVIEW OF NEW MUSIC FROM LOCAL ARTISTS

Biscuit Roller-LP- self released May 2013

These Sunset Heights rockers throw down garage-y/blues infused rock that takes off into experimental jam outs.  With the help of local engineer/producer Justin Leeah and recorded at the Downtown Sound and Vision Lab, the album is a steady mellow groover packed with 60’s style Manzarek flourishes on the keys, blues riffing and the soulful singing of Taylor Bones. Standouts on the album include “Rivet and Stitch” and “(Her) Monics”.

L.I.G.R.E -LP -self released June 2013

The Juarez electro/rock band L.I.G.R.E. keeps the party moving all night with their good vibes and dance friendly beats. With hints of older New Order and Daft Punk, their sound has a 90’s electronic touch but never feels throwback. On songs like “GAME”, the mid-tempo synths, driving bass lines and robots from Mars vocals create a collision course of the present sounds to the future. This is the soundtrack to your sweaty all night El Paso warehouse dance party. L.I.G.R.E fuses mid-tempo electronic sounds with indie rock channeling the energy of the El Paso/Juarez nightlife.

Bumpstreet Fonanza-EP- self released May 2013

El Paso’s Bumpstreet Fonanza nails it on their new self titled EP with their instrumental indie space-out jams. The band has a similar jam style to the Mahavishnu Orchestra and the Mercury Program, constantly changing the tempos real smooth and with ease. The song direction can travel either left or right, and the Bumpstreet Fonanza know exactly where to go with their eyes closed. With perfect time signature changes, they flip the script on the songs several times taking you in different directions in their effortless jamming. Bump it!

Part Time- PDA LP- out on Mexican Summer records July 2013

Based out of Los Angeles via El Paso (all members except one are from El Paso), PDA is a swooping masterpiece moving in and out of different places and settings.  You’ll hear echoes of Bowie, The Cure, The Smiths and… Flock of Seagulls? Hell yes. The songs are beautifully crafted with heavy bass lines, melancholy guitar jangle, romantic melodies and hypnotic synths. The music will get you wrapped up in a world inside your head, the song ends and then the next song, into another world.

Eureka the Butcher- Music for Mothers LP- released May 2013 on Rodriguez Lopez Productions

Eureka the Butcher’s new album “Music for Mothers” is a multi layered electronic attack to the brain. The album is a mash up of electronic, hip hop, break beats, bleeps and synths. The disjointed rhythms and multi-percussion snips create offbeat mellow grooves into the unpredictable. The album can spazz-out into a rainstorm of percussion (what the hell was that sound?) and then is grounded back to a steady grooving beat. Some songs sound like 3 different tracks playing at the same time syncopated perfectly. Kind of like walking into the Sunland Park Casino and hearing all the sounds from the slot machines matching up to a beat.
