What is your first memory of tattoos?
The first memory I can recall of a tattoo was, a gangster friend of mine, was tattooing some old english letters on his leg. I was only 12 years old. That is what planted the seed in my head of first wanting to get tattooed.
How did you get into tattooing art?
I got into tattooing only because I wanted a tattoo and no one would tattoo me because of my age. So, I ignorantly took it upon myself to buy some cheap ass equipment and started tattooing myself along with all of my friends at the time. I just never stopped and eventually did it the right way by getting an apprenticeship.
I have been tattooing for 23 years now. Not all of them were professional years. In fact, I’m still learning and I still have a lot to learn.
How has the tattoo culture in El Paso changed since you first started tattooing?
It is much more accepted for sure. There aren’t that many shady characters getting tattooed as there use to be. The quality of supplies and art has gotten a lot better. There is definitely more trend tattoos thanks to internet sites such as google, Pinterest, … I’ve noticed since there are T.V. shows about it now, many people think they are experts just because they saw the show. That always makes me laugh, hahaha!
Who are some of your favorite tattoo artists from El Paso?
Myker at Sun City on Zaragoza. He is definitely a very talented and respectable artist who has a lot of integrity. I’ve learned a lot from him. Robert “Devix” Ruiz at the Sun City on the gateway is doing some amazing tattoos. Everything that guy posts online is inspiring as hell. He is super dedicated to his art, a very hard worker.
What does art mean to you?
Art is a great outlet from yourself, while still recording an in-print of yourself or thoughts at the time you are creating.
I do watercolor painting which totally lends itself to tattooing. It is easier to have that medium transfer well.
Where can people find you and your work?
They can find me at West Texas Tattoo 820 N. Mesa or check out my work online Instagram: @ericwardtattoos Facebook.com/ericwardtattoos
