En este número tenemos entrevistas con Moby, Teri Gender Bender of Le Butcherrettes, Camilo Lara del Instituto Mexicano del Sonido, Eureka the Butcher + Sadah Luna y Claire Evans de YACHT entre otros. Pudimos entrevistar a la agrupación texana de Ghostland Observatory, además artículos sobre: When Your Strange: A film about The Doors, Les Amis de Pancho Villa y en Fusion Gallery: Exist1981.

Con ¨Amor¨ empezó el repertorio musical de la banda venezolana Amigos Invisibles, la cual se presentó el pasado fin de semana en el Lienzo Charro Adolfo López Mateos, en Ciudad Juàrez.

Día de Octubre fue la banda encargada de abrir el concierto para posteriormente darle paso a dj JRMX quien durante una hora mezcló al estilo electro house temas de varias bandas entre las ellas Hot Chip y Café Tacuba.

Al filo de la media noche las luces se apagaron y en la pantalla se leía ‘Amigos Invisibles’, para esto José Luis (guitarra), Juan Manuel (batería), Rafael (percusión) y Armando (bajista), ya se encontraban en el escenario introduciendo un sonido funky hasta que Julio (vocalista) llegó para en conjunto preguntar What is love?, desde ese momento el romanticismo entre el público y los músicos se hizo visible.

‘Diablo’ se encargó de mantener los cuerpos en movimiento hasta llegar al sudor, se escuchó ‘Que rico’ de igual manera ‘Caliente’.

Para aligerar el calor de la noche ‘All day today’ bañó a los espectadores con su tropical sonido. La poderosa guitarra de ‘Merengue killa’ también se hizó presente, así como la explosión de ritmos latinos que estuvo a cargo de ‘Esto es lo que hay’ y ‘El baile del sobon’

‘Ultrafunk’, ‘En cuatro’, ‘Plastic Woman’, ‘El disco anal’, ‘Viviré para ti’, así como ‘Óyeme nena’, fueron otros de los títulos interpretados por el grupo.

Las clásicas canciones como ‘Vecina’, ‘Mentiras’, ‘Cuchi cuchi’ y ‘Sexy’ también fueron parte del repertorio.

Y como excelentes músicos no pueden resistir la tentación de ejecutar en vivo mezclas de los grandes como David Bowie y Michael Jackson.

La noche se fundió en un festín de sonidos que concluyeron pasadas las dos de la mañana.

A donde va Kinky?

Field notes desde el Coachella 2012

En los festivales masivos se suda cerveza y bebidas energizantes, se respiran las aromas más funkys del condado y se observa a la gente más colorida y extrovertida todo esto al ritmo de sonidos que van desde el punk rock al acid house. Bienvenidos a Coachella, tierra de encuentro, donde tu vecino no es un extraño más y donde pedir un “toque” es más común que pedir la hora local.

Entre 80 y 85 mil personas se reunieron del 12 al 15 de abril para celebrar el rito de más de 100 bandas desplazadas en 5 escenarios. Algunos de los estelares fueron las nuevamente reunidas At The Drive-In, Refused y Firehose y algunos de los actos enormes como Radiohead, Swedish House Mafia y Snoop Dogg y Dr Dre; actos electrónicos de la nueva ola como Flying Lotus o The Gaslamp Killer y presentaciones de los clásicos Buzzcocks y Jimmy Cliff. Siempre hay un poco para todos y normalmente quiero pensar que nadie regresa a su casa decepcionado y diciendo que no quiere volver (pagar 2 dólares por un agua y 9 dólares por una cerveza grande valen la experiencia).

Si bien los die-hard fans de Coachella han opinado que en esta última entrega el festival “exageró” un poco con un festival doble la experiencia que me toco vivir por segunda vez fue un tanto diferente a las críticas.

El ambiente sigue siendo electrizante: la cantidad de personas coreando su canción favorita, la iluminación y visuales de algunos artistas y la sencillez y corazón con la que tocan ciertas bandas hacen de Coachella una experiencia excelente. The Airplane Boys, por ejemplo, dieron un show estupendo aun cuando el público no sobrepasaba los 50 asistentes, Death Grips de Sacramento rockearon un público de cientos aún cuando solo tienen a su favor un mixtape que no tiene ni un año de haber salido, Calvin Harris empacó la Sahara Tent como nunca lo había visto, A$AP Rocky y la A$AP Mob dieron un show que resume la palabra salvaje y DJ Shadow presentó un track con Zack de la Rocha completamente en vivo.

Más allá de la vasta cantidad de actos que se presentan en Coachella un “highlight” del festival siempre será la convivencia.

Reúne a tus amigos y viaja a la cálida California (aunque un tanto fría este año); arma tus casas de campaña, llena tus hieleras y disfruta de la situación, e incluso.  Gente con ropas coloridas provenientes de todas partes del mundo intentan hacer este un fin de semana para recordar ya sea bien compartiendo una cerveza con tu vecino o intentar conversar con algún extraño en su idioma natal. Algo ocurre durante estos tres días y no es solamente un asunto de “buenas vibras”, hedonismo o modas nuevas, se trata más bien de un suceso al que llamaría una sleepover masiva de gente que lo único que quiere es pasársela bien y celebrar la música como debe de ser, y aún cuando tus grupos favoritos no se vean figurados en los 3 días del festival imagina las posibilidades de pasártela excelente.

Yo voy a volver.

The Melvins rolled into town on a Tuesday night and played to a packed, standing room only House Of Rock. The last time The Melvins played El Paso, according to singer Buzz Osbourne was, “in 1986 somewhere in a warehouse where the inside walls were all blown out.” History may have repeated itself only in reverse because The Melvins blew the walls out of HOR with their music and stage performance.

Local bands that were listed on the bill were bumped off and because of it the show started early with long time punk veterans the Unsane opening the show. After the Unsane delivered a strong straightforward set the crowd was ready when The Melvins came out. With his trademark graying Afro hair, Buzz launched the show belting out anger on both the vocals and guitar while bassist Jared Warren held the bass thunder low while drummers Dale Crover and Coady Willis stole the show. The drummers played simultaneously and against each other through out the night making it an instant drum clinic for all musicians in attendance. The collective unit was an example of timing and precision amidst different musical movements, breaks, and effects. Even those unfamiliar with The Melvins long history of music, could not leave unimpressed by the band’s solid performance. It was a rare El Paso performance for a Band whose career spans 30 years. Hopefully they wont wait another 16 years to pass this way again.

Hablar de Canadá es hablar de buena música, inviernos largos y cerveza artesanal. Hablar de buena música canadiense es hablar de The Band, Leonard Cohen, Peaches, Metric y Leslie Feist. Muchos la conocen por su apellido y sinceramente muy pocos saben de su amplia trayectoria musical. Recordarán a Feist por éxitos como “Limit to your Love” (James Blake le dió un reconocimiento total durante el 2010/2011 con su cover downtempo electrónico) y “1234”, el tan afamado track que utilizó la compañía de la manzana en una campaña para promocionar alguno de sus productos y que elevó la venta de su disco The Reminder a niveles inesperados y estoy hablando de millones  de copias vendidas en tan solo unos días.

Vayamos al principio de todo. Feist tiene más de 1 década haciendo música, ya sea con Broken Social Scene o como solista. Su primer disco debutó en 1999 y dos años más tarde produjo el “sophomore album” titulado Let It Die y además se unió a sus amigos de BSS grabando un par de discos con ellos y manteniéndose en la rotación de sus miembros constantes durante algún tiempo. Leslie Feist a pesar de ser parte del supergrupo se ha podido consolidar una carrera como solista independiente que le ha dado fama como una de las mejores voces de la actualidad, y no me refiero a voces pop contemporáneas de los últimos dos años como Katy Perry o Rihanna, si no a este conjunto selecto de post Fiona Apples o Jane Birkins que raya entre el folk y el pop y el rock de una manera peculiar, caraterística y efectiva, como aquellas voces de Julieta Venegas, Regina Spektor, St. Vincent y Cat Power.

Feist ha sacado una colección de 4 álbumes de estudio desde 1999 y un dvd documental (“Look At What The Light Did Now”) que habla acerca del proceso creativo para grabar “The Reminder”, su álbum del 2007 que incluye temas como “I Feel it All”, “Limit to your Love” y “1234”. Posteriormente en el 2011 se da a conocer el álbum “Metals”, una colección 12 temas muy influenciados de una estela de jazz y blues y del cual ya se desprendieron dos sencillos: “How Come You Never Go There” y “The Bad in Each Other”.
Vaya, incluso los niños la han de recordar por su aparición especial en un episodio de Sesame Street hace 3 años. ¿Qué puede ser mejor que escuchar la voz de Leslie Feist acompañada de Elmo y un poco de nostalgia de la infancia?

Marfa Public Radio, Marfa Book Company, y Ballroom Marfa se enorgullecen en presentar a la cantante canadiense, Feist, en el Crowley Theater el 25 April 2012.

On  January 9th the tweet went out: “¡ ATTENTION ! To whom it may concern: AT THE DRIVE-IN will be breaking their 11 year silence THIS STATION IS …NOW…OPERATIONAL.” The Internet collectively lost it’s shit. Facebook burned, phones melted, teeth were lost. The most enigmatic, energetic, and romanticized band of the late 90’s- early 2000’s post-hardcore movement was back.
Almost eighteen years earlier, Cedric Bixler-Zavala and Jim Ward formed the group and performed the first show as At the Drive-In at Loretto High School. The legendary Hell Paso EP was released November of the following year, and was the first issue from the group. After three LPs, numerous tours and escalating tension, Bixler-Zavala and guitarist Omar Rodriguez-Lopez left the group to form The Mars Volta, while Ward, bassist Paul Hinojos and drummer Tony Hajjar made up the group Sparta.

Rumors of a reunion echoed for over a decade with fans’ hopes alternately lifted and dashed by cryptic (And sometimes not-so-cryptic…) statements by Bixler-Zavala and Ward, with Ward being of a there-will-be-no-reunion-no-more-questions-thank-you state of mind and Bixler-Zavala being of the maybe-I-don’t-know-let’s-see-how-things-go school of thought. In a July, 2009 interview, Rodriguez-Lopez stated that the once-bandmates had settled their differences at a summit at the guitarist’s home, but denied the possibility of a reunion.
The rumors turned into reality. Since January, the group has announced plans to perform both weekends of the 2012 Coachella Music and Arts Festival. They recently confirmed to play Lollapalooza Music Festival as well.

Now, the dangerous business of speculation: On April 1st, the group tweeted a map of Texas. As the week progressed, stars indicating the locations of Austin, Marfa, Dallas and El Paso were added to map, leading fans to believe that these were to be the sites of the first AtD-I shows in eleven years. To put everyone’s speculation to rest, the band confirmed their Texas shows. Ticket sales were announced and fans rushed to purchase them. All four Texas shows sold out within minutes of being announced.
This year’s Neon Desert Music Festival has a several AtD-I-related acts, including Sparta, Le Butcherettes, Zechs Marquise and Eureka the Butcher+Sadah Luna leading to conjecture among fans about a possible appearance. For anyone who missed the opportunity to see them during the handful of Texas shows, we can only hope they play Neon Desert Music Festival.

Although some already know the importance of Marfa in regard to minimalist artist Donald Judd and the creation of his foundation and museum, there are other cultural points of interest – like Ballroom Marfa and El Cosmico, among others that add something special to this town.

Although it is a small town (a population of approximately 1,981), the bookstore is worthy of a big city. For those of us that have had the opportunity to visit, we feel the need to go back frequently. They have a great collection of art and architecture books which are hard to find in other places. Although the city has several important cultural spots, in my opinion, Marfa Book Co. seems to be the catalyst of many of them.
