If you grew up during the 1990’s, you can easily recognize the iconic voice of Pearl Jam front man Eddie Vedder blaring through the airwaves with a barrage of defiant lyrics. Twenty-two years later, the Seattle band is still performing live with their most recent tour just wrapped up in September. Despite the band’s intercontinental tour, Vedder will be launching his own solo tour promoting his 2011 album “Ukulele Songs,” spearheaded by an opening performance on Halloween night at “The Pearl” in Las Vegas.
Vedder will be performing in El Paso at the historic Plaza Theater on November 7th at 7 pm and will be accompanied by The Frames’ vocalist and and guitarist Glen Hansard. The ‘Ukulele Songs’ tour is expected to conclude in Florida with two already sold out shows at the Ruth Eckerd Hall in early December.
Vedder was slated to begin his solo tour earlier this year and his original performance in El Paso was scheduled for April 17th. However, he was forced to postpone due to nerve damage in his right arm after having suffered a back injury.
Vedder’s legendary baritone voice influenced the sound of a generation and inspired the tone of other popular bands such as the Stone Temple Pilots, Fuel, Bush, Nickelback, and Creed. Despite the inevitable emulators, Vedder’s voice continues to be something of a national treasure. Although his trusty ukulele is the emphasis of his national junket, his vocals are sure to compete with the spotlight. During the tour, he will be performing a medley of songs from his solo albums along with a few Pearl Jam tracks; all of which are sure to be crowd pleasers.
Although his venture with the ukulele might seem to be an unlikely metamorphosis for the ‘Daughter’ and ‘Alive’ singer who epitomized the era of punk and alternative rock, focusing on the ukulele might also be seen as a sign of musical maturity. Limiting himself to the diminutive instrument forces him to draw back a little; instead of howling into the microphone, he constrains himself to a more mellow accompaniment for his strings. His new lyrics can be seen as autobiographical, focusing on topics like the crumble of his first relationship and the development of his second marriage.
Vedder’s personal life is interesting in its own right, having been a vocal pro-choice supporter, an opponent of the Bush administration and an activist for environmental issues. He also sprouted a very public quarrel with Ticketmaster in 1994, born out of a heartfelt need to provide would-be concert goers with affordable prices for live shows and ignited by a broken promise on Ticketmaster’s part to donate a portion of the service fees to charity. The band took the issue to Congress and, unfortunately, lost that battle after the Department of Justice determined that there were plenty of upcoming ticket outlets that would ease the vice-like grip that Ticketmaster Holdings had on the music industry at the time.
Pearl Jam and Eddie Vedder continue to be philanthropists for various causes such as raising awareness for Chrohn’s Disease and Epidermolysis Bullosa, donating to charities like the JP Haitian Organization and the Vitalogy Foundation, and encouraging their fans to be more politically aware.
